Mayor Randall Woodfin Gives State of the City Address, Neighborhood Revitalization a Top Priority

January 2022

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin delivered his 2022 State of the City address Tuesday, January 11.  The mayor spoke on a variety of topics including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, gun violence and a new $25MM housing initiative in partnership with GROWTH by NCRC called Oak Hill.

The Oak Hill project marks a major milestone in community revitalization and fills a much-needed gap in housing. Partnering with GROWTH, the City of Birmingham is working to create pathways to capital essential for neighborhood investment, redevelopment, and new home construction. Decades of neglect and a history of redlining have historically limited mortgage and financial services to the area putting home and business ownership beyond the reach of local residents and denying investment opportunities in the historic neighborhood.

Located near 51st Street Ensley and Avenue K, the community will feature 28 detached, single-family homes ranging from 1,227-1,350 square feet. The project will also feature an agreement with the Birmingham Construction Industry Authority to maximize opportunities for minority and women-owned enterprises and veteran-owned small businesses to participate in the development and construction of Oak Hill. Providing local businesses and residents with employment opportunities is a mission shared by all the partners.

The project broke ground in June 2021.  Seven homes are currently under construction with closings taking place winter of 2022.

Woodfin is coming off a decisive victory in the mayoral election back in August, securing a second term.
